JOHN JAMES BARNES, SR. (Age 94)  

Of Arlington County, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Mary Washington Hospital. He is survived by daughters, Kitsy Young of Montclair, VA and Shirley Leonard of Front Royal, VA; sons, John James Barnes of Mechanicsville, VA and Charles Barnes of Arlington, VA; as well as his sister, Cecile Odom of Mobile, Alabama. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Kitsy Moody Barnes. Mr. Barnes also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Tres McEvoy, Shawn McEvoy and Dawn Jones of McLean, VA, the three he raised, and Anthony Barnes, Jeff Beavers, Tori Barnes and Steve Barnes, Rachael Young, Mason Young and Beth Petersavage. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Mr. Barnes was a devoted Catholic, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. A veteran of WWII, Mr Barnes fought bravely in the Battle of the Bulge. He was the President of Barnes Engineering and Science in Mobile, Alabama. He retired from the Federal Government in 1987 after 42 years of service, many of which were spent at the Pentagon. He worked for the NASA program in 1968-1969. He was a past president of the Washington, DC Hypnotic Guild, and a member of VFW and the American Legion.
The family will receive friends at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 2 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, VA. A service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 2 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council 4034, 4724 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22408.
