Linda Rains Ragsdale died on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at her home in Springfield, VA, from pancreatic cancer. She is survived by daughter, Sally Rains Ragsdale of Midlothian, VA; son, James Edward Ragsdale, III of Fairfax, VA; sister, Caryl Clarke (Howard) of York, PA, niece, Catherine Clarke Kenworthy (Eric) of Hanover, PA and nephew, Daniel Howard Clarke of Detroit, MI. She was predeceased by her mother, Juanita Alkire Rains, father, Clare Gordon Rains and former husband, James Edward Ragsdale, Jr.
Linda was born in Washington, DC on February 24, 1945. She graduated from George Mason High School in Falls Church in 1963 and from the College of William & Mary, where she was a member of the Tri Delta sorority, in 1967. She remained an active alumna of all three.
Linda retired from NASA in 1997; then after 30 years of dedicated service in the federal government, she worked at the Kaiser Family Foundation until July. She was an avid reader and craftsperson, and she loved to travel, both domestically and internationally. As a member of Messiah United Methodist Church in Springfield, Linda participated in many ministries, including Kairos Prison Ministry and Walk to Emmaus.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 13, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home in Fairfax. The funeral will be on Thursday, August 14, at 1 p. m. at Messiah United Methodist Church in Springfield. Interment to follow immediately after in the church garden.
