LOLA M. OLSEN  
1944 - 2014  

Lola Miller Olsen, a scientist, swimmer and teacher, died in Huntersville, NC, on Saturday, April 19, 2014. She was 70.
 
Lola was born in Ephrata, PA, to Carl and Edith (Gehman) Miller. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1966 and earned her master's degree from UNC-Charlotte in 1972. While in Charlotte, Lola raised her children, taught Earth Sciences at UNC-Charlotte, coached swimming, earned her pilot's license and studied Climatology at UNC-Chapel Hill.
 
In 1986, she moved to Greenbelt, MD, to work at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. She served as the Project Manager for the Global Change Master Directory, a unique resource that makes valuable satellite data available worldwide. She also pursued doctoral studies and taught at the University of Maryland.
 
Lola is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sperry and Bill Krueger of Raleigh, NC; her son and daughter-in-law, Olee Joel and Tonje Woxman Olsen of Cornelius, NC; her grandchildren, Jack and Lucy Krueger, and Ole Christian, Carl and Caroline Olsen; her brothers, Andrew Miller of The Villages, FL, and Daniel Miller of Carollton, MO.
A memorial gathering will be held in June in Greenbelt. Memorials may be made to Uniting Against Lung Cancer (unitingagainstlungcancer.org) or to Hospice of the Chesapeake.
