Of Hamilton, VA, and Edgartown, MA, died on March 18 after a courageous 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his son Steven Allen of Purcellville, VA; daughter Phyllis Munowitz of Naperville, IL, and her husband, Michael; daughter Ronni Ward of Hamilton, VA, and her husband Gary; and granddaughter Emma Ward. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Nona Allen, and two sisters Harriet Allen
Wood and Joan Allen Mitteldorf.
Known to all as Sandy, he was born in 1925, and raised in the Bronx, NY. After serving in the
U.S. Army during World War II, and then graduating from New York University, he and his family settled in Merrick, NY, where they lived for more than 40 years. He later moved to Lakewood, NJ, and then to Hamilton in 2001. The family also has a second home on Martha's
Vineyard, where Sandy loved to spend the summers reading mystery novels, playing pinochle, eating chowder, and going to the beach.
Sandy worked for many years in the steel business and later in the garment industry in New York City. He was an accountant by vocation and, at an age when many others would have retired, he continued to help those with tax issues and other financial problems, practicing accounting until his death.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Hall's Funeral Home in Purcellville, VA. A service will follow at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Winchester, VA 22601.
Please visit to express online condolences to the family.
