VALERIE B. HARTY  

On March 3, 2014. Born January 17, 1932 in Danbury, CT to William McKinley Brown and Addie Elizabeth Brown. Attended Danbury High School and graduated from the Lincoln School for Nurses in New York City. She was the first black registered nurse to be employed by Danbury Hospital. Valerie worked as a registered nurse for a variety of hospitals and other employers, including the New York State Correctional system and for General Motors at the 1964-1965 World's Fair in Flushing, NY. Valerie was predeceased by her husband, Warren C. Harty and her youngest son, Dana J. Harty. She is survived by two sons, David C. Harty (Lynette) and Kevin W. Harty, Sr. (Theo); a daughter-in-law, Kathi (Dana); three grandsons, Kevin W. Harty, Jr., David C. Harty, Jr. and Damon C. Harty; two granddaughters, Kandyce M. Harty and Dana Y. Harty. Her surviving siblings include three brothers, William M. Brown (Jackie), James E. Brown and David J. Brown (Geri); three sisters, Beverly Wade, Mary Callahan and Patricia F. Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins
Visitation will take place on Monday, March 10, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Woodstream Church, 9800 Lottsford, Road, Mitchellville, MD 20721 followed immediately by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the same location.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Negro College Fund or to a Parkinson's Research foundation.
