VIRGINIA EILEEN HAWKE (Age 96)
Died on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. She was born on April 1, 1917 in Akron, Ohio to her late parents, Melville Ray Hawke and Emma Marie Hawke (nee Abbott). Ginny was a graduate of The Ohio State University
with a B.S. degree in Education, and an M.A. Degree in Physical Education. She also earned graduate credits from New York University
. She was active in many professional organizations including: Washington Field Hockey Association, Eastern Association for Physical Education for College Women and American Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
From 1944 to 1946, Ginny was a U.S. Navy
WAVE with her last station in Washington, DC. Following her service, she taught in the District of Columbia Public Schools. In 1950, she joined the faculty of American University as a Professor and Coach and retired in 1977. During those 27 years, she was much loved by students, athletes and fellow faculty members.
A lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, she was formally a member of the North Bethesda UMC when she lived in Bethesda. She was a resident of Asbury Methodist Village for the past 20 years and a member of the Asbury Community Church. Ginny was a well-known figure at Asbury because she taught dance and activity classes; she was perhaps best known as a Clown who performed at many events on campus! Ginny will be buried beside her beloved parents in Utica, Ohio.
A memorial service to celebrate Ginny's life will be held in the Guild Memorial Chapel at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow the service.
