WILLIAM DOVE  

On January 17, 2014, WILLIAM DOVE, of Columbia, MD. Beloved husband of 52 years to Louise Engle Dove; father to Linda and Elizabeth (William Kinderwater); grandfather to Jack, Claire and Emerson. Born in 1933 to parents Robert and Linda Gillespie Dove and raised in Greenbelt, MD, Bill studied aeronautical engineering at Penn State University from 1952-56 on a ROTC scholarship. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-61, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. In 1968, Bill completed his doctoral work in physics at the University of California, Berkeley, followed by seven years as a research physicist at the University of Maryland and the U.S. Naval Research Lab. Bill then spent 27 years managing programs in magnetic fusion theory at the U.S. Department of Energy, retiring in 2002. Bill enjoyed classical music, military history, and Penn State football. Although work took him all over the world and he loved experiencing the culture and foods of other countries, he nonetheless maintained a fierce devotion to his mother's rice pudding.
Services on Monday, January 20 at Witzke Funeral Homes, Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD, with visitation from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., services at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to Friends House Retirement,17340 Quaker Lane, Sandy Spring, MD 20860 or The U.S. Navy Memorial, 701 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Ste.123, Washington, DC 20004.
