Witold "Veet" Monkiewicz, aged 93, died peacefully in Waldorf, Maryland on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2014 and is now reunited with his true love, his wife of 52 years, Mary Elouise (Long) Monkiewicz who preceded him in death on January 8, 1996. They were married in Boise, ID at St. John's Cathedral on June 7, 1943 and were blessed with one daughter, Patricia Ann on October 29, 1945.
Veet was born on August 28, 1920 in Brockton, Massachusetts to the late Vincent and Zofija (Harasimowicz) Monkiewicz. He had two sisters that preceded him in death, Philomena and Albina (known as Sister Hermeline, FSSJ) and they grew up across the street from their beloved parish, Our Lady of Ostrabrama (now known as St. Edith Stein). He graduated from Brockton High School in 1938 where he starred on the varsity basketball team.
Left behind to cherish his memory are many treasured friends and family; his daughter, Pati (Jack) Darby of Mishawaka, IN, his four grandchildren, Mike (Manon) McCann of Virginia Beach, VA, Carrie (Matt) Steenbeke of Granger, IN Chris (Dave) Grossnickle and Kevin (Carrie) McCann of South Bend, IN, his six great-grandchildren, Dani (Ryan) McAfee, Katie, Joey and Billy Steenbeke, Amy and Bobby Grossnickle, and his great-great-grandchild, Gracie McAfee.
Visitation will be Friday, February 21, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Lee Funeral Home, Inc. 6633 Old Alexandria Ferry Road, Clinton, MD 20735.
