Harlan "Fuzzy" J. Hunger passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Aspirus Hospice House.
Fuzzy was born in Wausau on October 24, 1927 to the late Edwin and Cora (Ellenbecker) Hunger. He graduated from Wausau High School in 1946 where he lettered in football, basketball and golf which became his passion in life. As a child he caddied for 10 cents a round at the American Legion Golf Course. He was also a swimmer, diver and lifeguard at the Riverside Pool doing the fire dive at age 15. Following graduation he served briefly in the US Navy and then attended Lawrence College in Appleton, WI graduating in 1950 with a BA in economics. He also lettered in basketball and golf at Lawrence.
On August 11, 1951 he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Genrich. They had been married 63 years on August 11, just before his death. Fuzzy held sales positions at several local companies and worked for the March of Dimes as the North Central Wisconsin fundraiser. In that role, Vince Lombardi served as his campaign chairman. He had the opportunity to meet several Green Bay Packer players and was able to obtain season tickets in 1961.
Fuzzy was an accomplished golfer. He was a 50 plus year member of the Wausau Country Club where he and his friend Leo Kordus and pro Willy Stepanik formed the first Junior Golf program teaching children the skills of the game of golf as well as the manners and rules of the game. In later years he was able to play with friends at the Rib Mountain Golf Course. Fuzzy was a four time winner of the Channel 7 Invitational in the 1960's and early 1970's. Golf was his absolute passion.
In 1971, he purchased Marathon Travel Agency, Inc. which he owned and operated with Barbara until 1989. During those years he and his wife and family were able to travel to numerous foreign countries and he played golf in Scotland, Hawaii, Kenya, New Zealand, Mexico and all over the Caribbean.
Fuzzy is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Terri Towle and son-in-law John Towle, and son Scott Hunger and daughter-in-law Ann Hunger. He is further survived by two grandchildren Sean and his wife Jessica of Denver, CO. and Caitlyn Towle of Appleton, WI and two great grandchildren; Sawyer and Gavin Towle. He is also survived by his sister Lorraine Ash of Virginia Beach, Va and his nephew Allie P. Ash and wife Ellen of Great Falls, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandson Brodie Towle.
The family wishes to thank all of the physicians, nurses, support staff and hospice care professionals for all of the care provided to Fuzzy over the last few years.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 22, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, 903 3rd St., Wausau and officiated by pastor and friend Jerry Morris. A luncheon reception will follow. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2014 at Brainard Funeral Home, Wausau and again from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church on Friday. A family burial service will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park.
