Wergin, Jean Gilbert Evans
The last page of an excellent story that was our mother's life has floated gently from the book. Jean Gilbert Evans Wergin lost her eight year battle with dementia, dying January 13, 2014.
Jean was born to Florence Gilbert and Albert (Bob) Morrell Evans of 1010 Franklin St., Wausau, WI on April 30, 1924. It was the height of the "Roaring Twenties." It was almost as if all the positive optimism and happiness of that era were infused as permanent characteristics into Jean's tiny being. Upon the crash of the stock market in 1929 stock broker, Bob Evans, lost everything. Jean, her three sisters: Tory, Ann and Flo along with her parents moved into her grandparent's, Charles S. and Victoria S. Gilbert at 904 Franklin St. It was a Depression Era, Victorian mannered, Methodist home that formed the core values of the Evan girls. Mom was a lady filled with grace, kindness, happiness, optimism, love and deep faith with a smile to the very end. She gave of herself to her husband, family, friends, the community, various causes, and her Methodist faith with fidelity.
Jean joined the YWCA in 1938.
Jean graduated from Wausau High School in June 1942. The following fall Jean went to the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Jean pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. In 1943 Jean followed her sister Ann to Chicago to St. Luke's School of Nursing.
Before she finished, a dashing young fighter pilot just returned from Burma, Gerald Paul Wergin drove his pick-up to Chicago from Wausau to court Miss Evans. They became secretly engaged. Gerry tired of the Chicago run asked Jean to quit nursing three months before graduation. Announcing "My wife will not have to work anyway."
Jean and Gerry were married on Dec. 26, 1946 at the First Methodist Church in Wausau. They were married for 52 years.
The five foot three nursing student turned wife who wasn't going to have to work; had six babies, polio in 1953 and moved three times in the first 12 years. Jean was proud to serve as a brownie leader, a girl scout leader and cub scout den leader for six years. Jean was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the United Methodist Women-Mary Faith Circle. She was president of the FUMC/UMW in 1977 & 1978. She also taught Sunday school. Mom remained a gracious lady, steadfast in her faith. Confident that she was walking with the Lord she knew, "It is all about Love."
She supported her husband Gerry as he built The Wergin Company. Along with Jerry she was a member/supporter of the Wausau Club, the Wausau Country Club, the Elks Club, Rainbo Lodge, Lee Yawkey Woodson Arts Museum, Marathon County Historical Society, Women's Community and many other charities. She was a petit charming dynamo.
Mom was proud to belong to the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
Jean was a licensed real estate broker/sales person and worked with Williams Realty and Wergin Realty. She also completed the GRI exam. Buying a home with Jean was a treat, because she knew the history and stories of the families who had occupied the homes.
