Joseph O. Fochs, 86, formerly of Mosinee and Rhinelander, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Renaissance Assisted Living, Weston.
He was born Feb. 20, 1927, to the late Joseph and Mary (Vitlacyl) Fochs. He married Anne Sondelski on Nov. 15, 1947. She preceded him in death on Aug. 1, 2013.
He was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II stationed in Saipan.
A blueberry patch and a band saw. Oddly different but two of Joe's favorite interests. In a good year it was nothing to pick 50+ quarts of blueberries. When it came to woodworking, saws were like his right arm. You could always find him tinkering in his garage building something. He built each of his six kids a house, taking pride in each one. He spent almost 40 years in the pallet shop and Weyerhaueser. His buddies nicknamed him "box shop Joe". When he wasn't creating something out of wood he was making wood for his cottage on Crescent Lake.
Joe truly enjoyed all the seasons and being outdoors. Each morning started with a cup of joe on the deck and ended with a manhattan. Whether it was ice fishing, shoveling snow, making maple syrup, or boating with his kids and grandkids he lived life to the fullest. He loved feeding and watching birds. Each year his purple martins returned faithfully to his houses on Crescent Lake. Joe and Anne made many friends in Florida and Arizona where they spent winters until their health prevented them from doing so.
After Joe lost his wife of 66 years, Anne, on Aug. 1, 2013, the spark left his eyes and he seemed to lose all interest in life. Although he died of natural causes in reality he died of a broken heart.
Joe is survived by his six adoring children, his sons, Terry (Jody) Fochs, Mosinee and San Diego, and Joel (Kay) Fochs and Jon (Annette) Fochs, both of Mosinee, and his daughters, Carol Ahles, Mosinee, and Janet (Dr. Dan) Gremban and Pamela (Garrite) Brandenburg, both of Rhinelander; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Edward Fochs, Mosinee, and Marvin Fochs, Rib Lake. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne, three brothers, Lyle, Reginald and Rodney, three sisters, Marion, Evelyn and Donna, and a son-in-law, Robert Ahles.
Services will be at 6:30 pm Saturday September 7, 2013 at Beste Funeral Home, Mosinee. Rev. Donald Przybylski will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 pm until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the staff at Renaissance Assisted Living for the exceptional care they gave Joe.
