Matt Otte, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at St. Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

He was born September 8, 1925, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to Cornelius and Adrianna (Van Stelle) Otte. He attended grade schools in Sheboygan County at Weeden's Station, West Oostburg, and Lima Center. He attended Sheboygan Falls High School for three years and graduated a year later, in 1943, from Oostburg High School.
After attending Central College in Pella, Iowa, briefly, he joined the United States Navy in November, 1943. He was assigned to officers training at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana; at Central College in Fayette, Missouri; and at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1946 as an Ensign with a Bachelor of Naval Science degree. After serving in the Navy an additional year, he finished his college education at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948.
Matt began his professional career as a sports and news reporter for the Kaukauna Times in 1948. He moved to the Twin City News-Record in Neenah in 1949. He met his future wife, Mary Patricia Rasmussen of Neenah that same year, and they were married in 1950. The couple moved to Stevens Point in 1951 when Matt became sports editor of the Stevens Point Journal. In 1957 Matt became associate sports editor of the Wausau Record-Herald.
His newspaper career ended in 1958 when he joined the staff of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) in Marinette. When the WIAA offices moved to Stevens Point later that year, Matt and his family returned to Stevens Point and have lived in the city since that time. He became Associate Director of the WIAA in 1964 and retired in 1992 after more than 34 years with the association.
Matt and Mary's family consists of Steven (Debbie) Otte of Stevens Point, James who is deceased, Patricia (George) Ladecki of Hatley, Robert Otte of Stevens Point, and Amy (Scott) Townsend of Whiting. Matt is also survived by grandchildren, Megan Otte and Tyler Townsend of Stevens Point; Step grandchildren, Brian (Vicki) Ladecki, Brenda Ladecki and Brandy Ladecki all of Stevens Point, and Brooks (Amanda) Ladecki of Wausau. Step great-grandchildren include Heaven Ladecki and Kolton Ladecki of Stevens Point, Damion and Chase Ladecki of Wausau. He is also survived by sisters, Edna Mae (Walter) Wenhold of East Bethany, New York, and Gloria (Larry) Opgenorth of Oostburg; brother, Clifford (Haleta) Otte of Sheboygan Falls as well as a sister-in-law, Nancy Otte of Cedar Grove; and 25 nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death besides his parents and son were four brothers and a sister.
Matt served eight years on the Stevens Point City Council from 1964 to 1972. He was a volunteer from 1992 to 2010 at St. Michael's Hospital. He was active with the Senior Olympics program from 1991 to 2009.
A memorial service witnessing to Matt's Christian faith will be held Monday, April 30, 2012, at Woodlands Church, 190 Hoover Avenue, Plover, 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Brian Berg officiating. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Boston Funeral Home and also Monday morning from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at Woodlands Church preceding the service. His body has been donated to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
