Kjol, Robert

Robert M. Kjol, 66, Wittenberg, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at his home.

He was born on January 20, 1947 in Milwaukee, the son of the late Gunnar and Marjorie (Burke) Kjol.

On February 14, 1970, Bob was united in marriage to Patricia Pezalla in Milwaukee. She survives.

Robert graduated from Morehead State University in Minnesota in 1969 with a Bachelor's degree in Social work and then in 1975 he graduated from UW-Milwaukee with a Master's Degree in Social Work. Bob and Pat worked as House Parents at Norris School for Boys in 1970. After grad school, he worked with adolescents in the Milwaukee County Mental Health Program. In 1976, Bob started working for Lutheran Social Service in Black River Falls and in 1977, took a position at the Homme Home for Boys in Wittenberg. He worked for the Homme Youth and Family Programs for over 30 years. Among his many achievements, he established the Journey Program at Homme, which is an in-house treatment program for juvenile sex offenders. Bob became a nationally known speaker on the subject and traveled all over the country to speak at conferences. He also was key in developing a Ropes Course Program which he was very proud of. Bob is a published author on many topics related to adolescence mental health treatment alternatives. He was an adjunct professor at Upper Iowa University in Wausau, teaching classes on Victimology and Social Deviance and he also taught Sunday School at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Wittenberg.

Bob loved to travel; he was an adventurous spirit from a young age. As a child, he had the opportunity to live in many areas of the world including Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. Later in life, he and Pat enjoyed traveling the country to see family and friends and explore places. They just had returned home from a fun trip to New Orleans. Bob loved camping, golf, gardening and his family. He was also a very active member of Walls of Wittenberg.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Kjol, Wittenberg; three children, Kristina (Brian) Swanson, Green Bay, Tim (Amy) Kjol, Cross Plains and Kendra (Robert) Krall, Tuscan, AZ; four grandchildren, Dakota and Laura Swanson, Henry Kjol and Samuel Robert Krall; three siblings, John (Pat) Kjol, Ocala, FL, Randa (Bruno) Gravanti, Tampa, FL and Terry (Karina) Kjol, Houston, TX, mother-in-law, Mildred Drey, San Diego, CA, sister-in-law, Mary (Tom) Galetich and Brothers-in-law, Jeff Pezalla and Charles Pezalla. Bob is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Raphael Pezalla and brother-in-law, Tim Pezalla.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. Rev. Amy Meyer will officiate. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9am until the time of services at the church. Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg is assisting the family with arrangements.
