CANTON, Mo. -- Billy Joe Darnell, 56, of Canton, died Saturday afternoon (March 30, 2013) at his home in Canton. He was born May 9, 1956, in Quincy, Ill., a son of Russell Dale and Ruth Fannie Hodson Darnell. He married Velvet C. Gottman on June 23, 1979, at the Vermont Street United Methodist Church in Quincy. Bill enjoyed shooting and he was the secretary/treasurer for the Quincy Pistol and Rifle Club. He served 20 years in the military first serving in the Army and then serving in the Army National Guard as an MP. He was a certified conceal carry instructor and was a certified range officer. He was also a member of the NRA and the USPSA. Bill had a great love for his family and friends. The man, the myth, the legend, the hero of our time who left us to soon. Survivors include his wife, Velvet, of Canton; two sons, Phillip (Kim) Darnell of Canton and Chris Darnell of St. Louis; two grandchildren, Olivia and Jenna, both of Canton; five brothers, Charles (Patty) Darnell of Green River, Wyo., Glenn Darnell of Lewistown, Jack Darnell of Quincy, Ill., Tom (Judy) Darnell of Monticello and Gary (Keela) of Lewistown and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bob Darnell and Roger Darnell, and one nephew, Carl Darnell. SERVICES: 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Davis Funeral Home in Canton, with Pastor Stacey Nicholas officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Lewistown Cemetery in Lewistown.
