Bruce Gerhard Bartelt Obituary
Bruce Gerhard Bartelt, 89, of 2005 Wilmar Drive, Quincy, died Thursday (June 13, 2013) at Sunset Home.

He was born on Aug. 14, 1923, in Quincy, a son of Gerhard F. and Iva Belle Patterson Bartelt. He married Elizabeth Jean Yancey on Dec. 25, 1943, in Quincy, while on leave from the Navy during World War II. She died on Dec. 4, 2004.

Bruce was a 1941 graduate of Quincy High School, attended Quincy College and graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., with a degree in business and economics. He joined the United States Navy in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theatre until 1946.

Upon returning home from the Navy, Bruce began his business career at Moorman Manufacturing Co. as a district sales manager. Later he joined Quincy Compressor Company, originally as a district sales engineer in Minneapolis. He was promoted and transferred back to Quincy as their purchasing agent. He then joined Gardner-Denver in marketing and retired in 1983.

Bruce was active in the community. He was a member of the Golden K (Kiwanis) Club for 22 years and served as its president and lieutenant governor (Illinois). He also served on the board as vice president of the Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging; as a board member and president of the Quincy Senior Citizens Case Coordination Unit; as a board member and president of the Adams County Mental Health Association (now Transitions); and was active with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for many years. He was also a longtime member of the Elks Lodge No. 100 in Quincy. He was a past member of Spring Lake Country Club and Sheridan Swim Club.

Bruce enjoyed traveling across the United States and Europe with his wife. He also enjoyed backpacking in the Rocky Mountains with his sons, and fishing with his daughter and sons. He also enjoyed boating, playing bridge and woodworking.

Bruce is survived by five children, Gary B. (Ruth) Bartelt, David Y. Bartelt, Rebecca J. (John) Brewer and Dan E. Bartelt, all of Quincy, and Paul L. (Gennie) Bartelt of St. Ann, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Bartelt of St. Louis, Marc Brewer (Maggie) of Orland Park, and Sharadan (Sam) Parks, Phillip (Dawn) Brewer, Sera Jarvis, James Brewer, Daniel Bartelt and Dana Bartelt, all of Quincy; three great-grandchildren, Jacob Brewer, Abbey Brewer and Victor Jarvis; and two sisters, Dorothy (Edward) Smith and Joanne Bartelt of the Chicago area.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Bartelt.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Monday, June 24, in Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ. A private burial will be held at Greenmount Cemetery.
