CLAYTON, Ill. - Doris Nelson Yates, 92, formerly of Clayton, died peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, in Lansing, Mich.
Doris was born in Timewell on Jan. 10, 1921. Her family moved to Clayton in 1926. She graduated from Clayton High School in 1939 and received her Bachelor of Arts in music and drama from Culver-Stockton College in 1942. After working as a high school teacher for a year in Aledo, Doris married her college sweetheart, Robert Yates (1915-2007) in 1943. After five years in Chicago while Bob completed his graduate studies, the couple returned to Clayton, where they lived for 55 years before moving to Lansing in 2002 to be near their daughters and their families.
A homecoming queen at Culver-Stockton, Doris was noted for her fashion sense and enduring beauty. Her social nature and gracious manner endeared her to friends and acquaintances alike. She was also a dedicated bridge player, playing weekly until the last six months of her life. Her love of the game helped her make many good friends, as well as the occasional $2 prize.
Called Nanny by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was a patient and indulgent grandmother. In recent years, she enjoyed visits to and from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Last year she succeeded where many before her had failed in teaching her eldest great-grandson to tie his shoes. Her father taught her to drive when she was 10 so she could chauffeur her mother, and she continued to drive until the last months of her life.
Among favorite recorded quotes, Doris wrote: "Don't cry because she is gone. Smile because she was here."
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Yamanishi (Herbert), son, Robert Thomas Yates (Nicole), and daughter, Jeanne Tomlinson (Mitchell); grandchildren, Meghan (David), Drew (Emmy Kong), Lucas (Katie Engel) and Evan Yamanishi, Zachary, Alex and Amrine Tomlinson, and Ripley, Erin Kirkpatrick (JJ) and Lucy Yates; great-grandchildren, Kai, Emrys and Dashiell Yamanishi (via Meghan), and Akio and anticipated baby boy Yamanishi (via Drew); sister-in-law, Margaret Yates Mills, and brother-in-law, Willard Yates; former daughter-in-law, Lizbeth Gage; and many nieces, nephews, good friends and bridge partners.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, Bob, and their daughter, Karen.
SERVICES: The family plans a private memorial.
MEMORIALS: Karen Sue Yates Memorial Trust Fund at Culver-Stockton College, Canton, Mo.
