James P. Ward Obituary
James P. Ward, 70, of 1927 W. Wilmar Drive Quincy, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 19, 2013) in the Illinois Veterans Home after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

Jim was born on April 26, 1943, in Ottumwa, Iowa, a son of Paul J. and Harriet Cottrell Ward. He married Marilyn Reid on Aug. 26, 1966, in Oakland, Calif. She survives.

Mr. Ward served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War as a hospital corpsman. He was stationed at Oakland (Calif.) Naval Hospital. After his discharge, he became a registered nurse anesthetist and worked primarily at St. Mary's Hospital in Quincy, and Columbia (Mo.) Regional Hospital, retiring in 1997 due to his disease.

Jim had been a member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church and currently at St. Francis Catholic Church. He loved his job and his family.

He enjoyed helping others, fixing anything and everything, making beautiful walnut furniture, restoring his vintage Corvette and doing yard work.

In addition to his wife, Marilyn, his wife of 47 years, he is survived by his daughters, Kelly J. Scheller and her husband, Brian, and Christine Ward, grandsons, Jacob and Patrick Scheller, all of the St. Louis area; and a sister, Betty (Bill) Cottrell of Seattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Tom Ward.

The family will be eternally grateful to the staff at the Illinois Veterans Home for the excellent care Jim received there.
