Joseph "Jay" Boyer Obituary
Joseph "Jay" Boyer, 94, of Garrett, Ind., formerly of Quincy, died at 8:22 p.m. Saturday (May 4, 2013) in Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home in Garrett.

Born March 26, 1919, in LaGrange, Mo., Jay was a son of Asberry and Mary Hoyes Boyer. He married Mary "Corky" Hecteman on Dec. 30, 1950, in Quincy. She died March 10, 2002.

Jay served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic, receiving a European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with a Silver Battle Star and a Purple Heart from action in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a graduate of LaGrange (Mo.) High School and was a former member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Quincy.

Jay was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening and raising homing pigeons. He loved spending time with his family.

Mr. Boyer farmed in the LaGrange area and then worked in the mintrate department at Moorman Manufacturing Co. for 28 years, retiring in 1981.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Boyer of Auburn, Ind., and Patrick Boyer (Cheryl) of Bloomington; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Boyer of Quincy; and a sister, Bette Rose of St. Charles, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Christopher Boyer; and a brother, Harold.

SERVICES: A 9:30 a.m. prayer service will be held Thursday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. Don Blaser conducting. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery with full military honors by Quincy American Legion Post No. 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail.

VISITATION: 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home.

MEMORIALS: Quincy American Legion Post No. 37.
