BASCO, Ill. -- Laverne Duane "Shotsie" Huls, 66, of Basco, passed away at 4:10 a.m. Monday (Aug. 11, 2014) in his home. He was born Nov. 19, 1947, in Keokuk, Iowa, a son of Irvin Henry and Gertrude (Wachtendorf) Huls. On July 9, 2001, he was united in marriage to Danette Grant in Las Vegas. They had been together for 32 years. She survives. Shotsie graduated from Carthage High School in 1965. He then served two tours in Vietnam in the U.S. Navy. He was a guest member of the V.F.W. He had been a banbury operator at Shellor-Globe in Keokuk for many years, retiring in 2009. He was a retired volunteer firefighter for the Carthage Clipper Fire Department. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Chargers fan. Shotsie enjoyed playing softball and blackjack and attending the Illini West Chargers football games. He loved spending time with his grandsons. In addition to his wife, Danette, of Basco, survivors include two children, Joshua Huls of Quincy and Kari (Kevin) Reuschel of Bowen; three grandsons, Aden Huls and Alexander and Noah Reuschel; his mother, Gertrude Huls, of Carthage; brothers and sisters, Connie (Bill) Sutton and Shirley Payne of Lexington, Dale (Clarice) Huls of Keokuk, Kevin Huls of Carthage and Brenda Huls of Keokuk; a niece and many nephews; and his dogs, Stetson and Bailey. Shotsie was preceded in death by his father, Irvin; a brother, Jerry; and a brother-in-law, Jimmy Payne. SERVICES: 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, in the Printy Funeral Home, Carthage. Burial will follow in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, south of Carthage. VISITATION: From 9 a.m. until time of services Friday in the funeral home. MEMORIALS: To the family of Shotsie Huls.
