EDINA, Mo. -- CWO Michael Wayne Bishop, 78, of Edina, died Thursday morning (Oct. 10, 2013) in his residence, Edina.

He was born July 8, 1935, in Edina, a son of Noble Lee and Velma Lee Kidwell Bishop.

Mike was united in marriage to Carol Lee Merrell on June 6, 1959, in Edina.

Mr. Bishop was a 1953 graduate of the Edina High School and attended one year of college at Kirksville State Teachers College in Kirksville.

He served his country in the United States Army for 23 years, one month and 16 days and attained the rank of chief warrant officer. During his military career he served in Japan, Germany, Panama Canal and three tours of duty in Vietnam. He received four Bronze Stars in 1967, 1969, 1970 and 1971; the Air Medal in 1970; the Meritorious medals in 1976 and 1977; Army Commendation medals in 1968 and 1969 with first Oak Leaf Cluster, 1970 with second Oak Leaf Cluster and 1973 with third Oak Leaf Cluster.

Mr. and Mrs. Bishop resided in Columbia 10 years where they raised their family before moving to Edina in 1987. Mike was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service out of the Baring, office until his retirement.

He was a member of the Cyril A. Graham American Legion Post No. 261 of Edina, the Knox County V.F.W. Memorial Post No. 4822, the Baring Country Club and the Edina County Club and was a member and deacon of the Edina Christian Church.

Mike's hobbies included yard work, especially mowing his beautiful lawn. He thoroughly enjoyed visiting and spending time with his family, whom he loved deeply.

Survivors include, his wife, Carol Lee, of Edina; two sons, Mark Alan Bishop of Olathe, Kan., and Michael Lee Bishop and wife, Sheila, and their two sons, Andrew Michael "Drew" and Austin David Bishop, also of Olathe; one brother and four sisters, Donna Stockham and fiancée, Bruce Normile, of Baring, Sue Johnson and husband, Dick, of Baring, Dan Bishop and wife, Judi, of Baring, Janice McGinnis and husband, Mike, of Edina, and Brenda Beckner and husband, Mike, of Corydon, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Mary Bishop of Edina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jack and J.W. Bishop; one sister-in-law, Judy Bishop; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Stockham.

SERVICES: 2 p.m. Sunday in Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, Edina. The Rev. Dewayne Wellborn and the Rev. Maynard Blackwood will officiate. Burial will be in the Linville Cemetery, Edina, with military honors provided by the Cyril A. Graham American Legion Post No. 261 and the Knox County V.F.W. Memorial Post No. 4822 of Edina. Music will be provided by Brent Karhoff, soloist and Carol Hayes, organist. Vocal selections will be "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace." Honorary bearers will be Bruce Normile, Dick Johnson, Ryan Bishop, Dan Bishop, Mike McGinnis and Mike Beckner.

VISITATION: 4 p.m. Saturday with family present 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
