LA GRANGE, Mo. -- Phillip Leon Garkie, 69, of rural LaGrange, passed away Tuesday evening (Aug. 19, 2014) in his home near LaGrange.

He was born Jan. 21, 1945, near LaGrange, a son of Melvin Cecil and Mildred Anna Marie Bringer Garkie. He married Judith Ann Berg on Aug. 10, 1968, in the Lutheran Church of St. John in Quincy, Ill. She survives.

Phillip was a 1963 graduate of LaGrange High School and Kansas City Mechanical School. After graduation, he took his first job at Cahalan Ford in Edina. During this time, he was called by his country to serve and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, stationed in Fort Gordon, Ga., where he was a military policeman from 1965 to 1967. After the service, he went to work for United Parcel Service. He later owned and operated G&M Electronics in LaGrange for a couple of years, and then went into custom bulldozing and enjoyed it very much. He was also a distributor for Mystik Oil Products.

Phillip was an avid NASCAR follower and fan of Carl Edwards. He loved babies, children, spending time with his grandchildren and all his family, and enjoyed fish fries and riding his four-wheeler and antique International tractors. He was also known for his ability to fix things and could repair about anything. Phillip was a member of the Lutheran Church of St. John in Quincy.

In addition to his wife, Judy, of LaGrange, survivors include his father, Cecil Garkie, of Hannibal; two children, Leanne Marie Garkie Vander Maiden of Quincy and Phillip Eugene Garkie of LaGrange; two brothers, Wayne (Enid) Garkie of Quincy and Carroll (Shirley) Garkie of Ewing; two sisters, Paulette Novel of New London and Janet Kay Tonkinson of Malcomb, Neb.; one grandson, Gabriel Ryan Vander Maiden of Quincy; two granddaughters, Kaitlyn Marie Vander Maiden of Columbia and Taylor Ann Garkie of Canton; mother-in-law, Jean Berg of Quincy; brother-in-law, Myron Berg of Basco; sister-in-law, Glenna (Paul) Cade of Eau Claire, Wis.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
