Ruth A. Weid Barnett of Birmingham, Mich., died peacefully Sunday surrounded by her family (Nov. 24, 2013) after a 10-year struggle with Alzheimer's.

She was born May 22, 1927, in West Point, Ill., the only daughter of Leonard and Anna Habel Weid. On July 4, 1946, she married Lowell H. Barnett, also of West Point, at Luther Memorial Church in Quincy.

She attended school in West Point and graduated from Carthage High School in 1945. Following high school, she studied nursing at the Blessing Hospital School of Nursing in Quincy.

Ruth and Lowell began their married life in Urbana where he was attending the University of Illinois. In 1949, they moved to Vicksburg, Miss., where Lowell worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. From there they moved to Alexandria, Va., in 1951 and finally to Birmingham, Mich., in 1963.

Ruth was a devoted wife and mother and loved travel, Elderhostels and music. She was a devout Christian who shared her kind heart and generous spirit with all who knew her. Ruth was a warm and compassionate person, reaching out when she felt someone needed her help. She had a lovely sense of humor with a hearty laugh, finding the humor or bright side of events as often as possible.

She will be so missed by all who loved her.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Randy (Christine) of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Russell (Linda) of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; daughter, Lori Barnett of San Anselmo, Calif.; and three grandsons, Michael Turner of Frankfort, Ky., and Clayton Barnett and Kyle Barnett of Lawrenceburg. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Beulah Weid and Sharon Barnett of Quincy.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four older brothers, William, Harold, and twins, Clyde and Claude Weid.
