LIBERTY, Ill. -- Ruth Carlene Waters, 85, of rural Liberty, died at 8:10 p.m. Monday (May 13, 2013) in Blessing Hospital in Quincy. Born Aug. 12, 1927, in Clayton, Carlene was a daughter of Orville Elsworth and Bertha Clair Seckman Summy. She married Kenneth Waters on May 30, 1948, in the Beverly United Methodist Church. He died July 3, 2008. Carlene was a longtime member of the Beverly United Methodist Church and a 65-year member of the Cornelia Chapter, Order of Eastern Star in Perry, Ill. An accomplished seamstress, Carlene also enjoyed reading and loved animals, especially her pet cats. Carlene was a 1945 graduate of Liberty High School. Following her graduation, she received an emergency teacher's certificate because of World War II and taught school in a one-room country school for two years. Following her marriage, Carlene devoted her life to her family and cherished the time she spent with them. Survivors include a son, Michael Waters (Susan) of Liberty; two daughters, Jeanette White (Michael) of Liberty and Beth Pruitt (Chad) of Commerce, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey White (Kris), Steven White (Stacy), Jon White (Shauna), Sean Waters and Clayton Waters, all of Liberty, and Daniel Pruitt and Hannah Pruitt, both of Commerce; two stepgrandchildren, James Cawthon (Cyndi) of Plymouth, Ind., and Gary Cawthon of Jacksonville; four great-grandchildren, Landon White, Natali White, Samantha White and Anderson White; three stepgreat-grandchildren, David Cawthon, Scott Cawthon and Sarah Cawthon; and many loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Waters was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; a daughter, Kathie Cawthon; a brother, Halbert Summy; and five sisters, Lois Stickler, Kathleen Kurfman, Eleanor Stauffer, Marguerite Dotson and Loraine Murphy. SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Beverly United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sidney Crowcroft conducting. Burial will be in Mound Prairie Cemetery at Beverly. VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy and 9:30 a.m. until time of services Friday at Beverly United Methodist Church.
