Ruth Mava Platt Fjelstad, 94, of Oro Valley, Ariz., formerly of Green Valley, Ariz., and Quincy, joined her Lord in Heaven at 8:38 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 21, 2013) in her home.

Ruth was born at home March 7, 1919, the youngest child of Josiah Alanson "Dode" and Margaret Hannah Harvey Platt. She was the fourth generation of Platts to live on the family property north of Quincy in Riverside Township.

Ruth married World War II Marine Corps veteran Karsten Iver Fjelstad, formerly of Canton, S.D., on Sept. 26, 1947, in Luther Memorial Church, Quincy. Karsten died Oct. 7, 1991.

A graduate of Quincy High School, Gem City Business College and Blessing School of Nursing, Ruth was a registered nurse. She received further nursing training at the University of Minnesota, Syracuse (N.Y.) University and Illinois State University. Ruth's nursing career started at Blessing Hospital and progressed to the Adams County Health Department. She retired in 1976 from the Adams County Tuberculosis Treatment Clinic.

Ruth was active in the Blessing Nurses Alumni Association and served as president and treasurer. She was voted Nurse of the Year in 1971.

A lifelong member of Luther Memorial Church until her relocation to Green Valley in 1999, Ruth faithfully served the church through Altar Guild as member and president, the WICKS Society, WELCA Women's Group, and Library Guild as member, secretary and treasurer. In Green Valley, she was a member of Desert Hills Lutheran Church and also served in the Altar Guild there, as well as in the Women's Guild of ELCA.

In Quincy, Ruth was a member of Church Women United and had served as secretary and treasurer. She was given the organization's Valiant Woman award in 1997. Also while living in Quincy, Ruth was a volunteer at the Health and Resources Library of Blessing Hospital and a hostess at the Villa Kathrine Castle. She helped many years delivering Meals on Wheels.

In Green Valley, she was a member of the Republican Women's Club and the Green Valley Christian Women's Club.

Avid golfers, Ruth and Karsten were longtime members of Cedar Crest Country Club and worked many hours helping to build the club's present facility and grounds on North 36th Street. They both served on the CCC Board of Directors. She served as treasurer and secretary for the Ladies of Cedar Crest.

Pursuing year-round golf, Ruth relocated to Green Valley in 1999. Well past 80 years of age, she often played golf three times a week and was well known for her putting abilities.

The Fjelstads traveled extensively throughout the continental United States, visiting 47 states. They often joked about not having been to Oregon and wondered how they could have missed it. Their favorite trips were to Minnesota to visit Karsten's cousins and catch as many fish as possible.

Ruth is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen Ruth and Mark Hardy; some special Harvey clan cousins; and nursing school roommate and longtime dear friend, Doris Fleer Lepper of Quincy.

As well as her husband, Karsten, and parents, Ruth was preceded in death by three sisters and their husbands, Dorothy Esther Anna and Warren John Lewis, Florence Margaret and Paul Fred Lewis, and Marion Sarah and Fredrick William Jacobs, all of Quincy; one brother and his wife, Vernon Alanson and Bettie J. Brewer Platt of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a brother, Harvey, in infancy. She also was preceded in death by two special aunts from whose first names her middle name was derived, Miss Mabel Harvey and Miss Eva Harvey.
