Ellen (Nimaroff) Gordon, M.S.W., age 82, died peacefully in her sleep at home in the early hours of Saturday, March 2, 2013 after a long illness from multiple causes. She had undiscovered rheumatic fever as a child which was first manifested as congestive heart failure from mitral stenosis at age 46. At 49 she had the first of three valve replacements, all done at the Brigham. In 2003, she had the first of three surgeries on her right foot, and in 2007 & 2008, two neuro surgical procedures. 2011 saw a left mastectomy for breast cancer. Despite her illness, she was a bright and intuitive with a very quick mind and loved history, art and literature. She was born in Irvington, NJ where her father, Dr. Meyer Nimaroff practiced medicine. After graduating from Indiana University in 1951 with a B.S. in speech & hearing, she earned a M.S. in that field at Brooklyn College. Later, despite her illness, she earned a M.S. from New Haven State College in Urban studies and became Director of Volunteering at Holl-Brooke Psychiatric Hospital in Westport, CT. She then earned her M.S. in Counseling from the University of Bridgeport and a M.S.W. from the University of CT. In a private psychotherapy practice in Westport, CT specializing in crisis therapy & problems of the elderly, she and another geriatric social worker, Louis Rosenfeld, did group therapy in nursing homes. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Benjamin D. Gordon of Yarmouthport and three daughters; Wendy Sheridan, a high school science teacher in Ottawa, IL, Marcy Gordon, an attorney with Jeffries Investment Bank in Manhattan and Amanda Gordon, an executive assistant at NBC in Manhattan. She also leaves three grandchildren; Katie, David and Larry Sheridan. She and her husband lived in Westport, CT for 36 years before moving to Yarmouthport in 1996. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 5 from 2-3 pm with a memorial service at 3 pm at Morris, OConnor & Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Drive in South Yarmouth.
