John H. Gauthier, age 89, died peacefully, Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at home, surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Brighton, raised and educated in Allston and has lived in Braintree for sixty years. He was employed in the newspaper industry as a pressman for over fifty years. He began his career with the former Herald Traveler, later worked at the Boston Herald before joining the Boston Globe for eleven years. He has been retired many years. John was a World War II veteran. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps and participated in the battles of Iwo Jima, Tinian, Saipan and the Marshall Islands. He was a member of the VFW Braintree Post 1702. He served as a former Braintree Town Meeting member. John was also well known as a swimming coach at the Quincy YMCA, at Boston College High School and for the New England Barracudas. John enjoyed woodworking and hiking. He was devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Beloved husband of the late Virginia M. (Mayo) Gauthier. Devoted father of Denise M. Spaulding and her husband Ron of Braintree, Jeffrey J. Gauthier and his wife Robin of Abington, John H. Jack Gauthier, Jr. and his wife Joanne of Braintree, Rita F. Dennehy and her husband Tom of Abington, Paul M. Gauthier and his wife Christine of Rockland. Loving grandfather of fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral from the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, was held Tuesday, January 7th at 8 a.m. Funeral Mass in Saint Thomas More Church, corner of Hawthorne Road and Elm Street, Braintree at 9 oclock.
