Merrill C. Lockhard, of Bridgewater died June 26, 2013 at the age of 72 . After a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer he passed away peacefully in his home of 35 years. Merrill was born in Houlton, ME the only child of the late Shirley (Maxell) and Cecil J. Lockhard. A graduate of East Bridgewater High School and attended Bentley College. Merrill was a former newspaper reporter/columnist for the Nashua Telegraph and Concord Monitor. He was a political/ investigative reporter, columnist, and state editor. Merrill had a syndicated column which he contributed opinionated editorials to the Quincy Patriot Ledger and the Providence Journal. He was an accomplished speaker who has addressed a wide array of audiences. As a reporter he was invited to the white house by President Gerald Ford and President Jimmy Carter. Once retired Merrill pursued his love of writing and published two suspense novels, Newport Conspiracy and Aaron's Dead. He had just completed editing a true story titled Beatrice of Andover. His wish is to have it published. Merrill was a real estate broker, served on the Bridgewater Advisory Board and he also enjoyed gardening, golfing, genealogy, reading, and sports. But most of all he cherished time spent with his family. Beloved husband of Kathryn M. (Smith) Lockhard of Bridgewater for over 50 years. Devoted father of Tracey Burke and her husband Michael of Plymouth, Merrill Lockhard Jr. and his wife Norine of Fall River, Kimberly Markham and husband Paul of Raynham, and Tiffany Maher and husband James of Lakeville. Treasured Papa by grandchildren Katelyn and Michael Burke, Jasmine Lockhard, Nicholas and Emilee Markham, and Brendan, Allyson, and Jillian Maher. Loving in-laws of Elsie Smith and the late Robert Smith. Along with countless family and friends. Funeral service was in the Prophett Chapman Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 98 Bedford Street, Bridgewater Monday July 8, at 11 a.m. Visiting hours began at 9 a.m. Burial followed the Service in Elmwood Cemetery.
