Henry Field Haviland, Jr., of Concord, MA, formerly of Cambridge, passed peacefully on January 5, 2012 with his children Deborah, Mark and Stewart, and daughter-in-law Nancy around him. He was the loving grandfather of Peter and Emily Haviland of Acton. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1941, served in the Navy during World War II, and earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard in 1950. He was Professor of Political Science at Haverford College from 1950 to 1956, and served as Director of American Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. from 1956 to 1968. In 1968 he became Professor of Political Science at Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University until his retirement. He felt his purpose in life was to help people to live and work together peacefully. He achieved this through his teachings, books and articles. He was a true gentleman, a diplomat , and a scholar who was much appreciated by his many friends and students. He was an avid tennis player, an accomplished amateur painter, and found serenity in the beauty of nature. He loved everyone and everyone loved him. We will remember him in our hearts always.
