George L. Copeland, 90, of Waltham, formerly of Easton and Pocasset, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2013 after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Marilyn E. Copeland (Boulette). Ge orge was born in Easton on July 3, 1922 to George H. Copeland and Myrtie Shaw Copeland. George was a 1940 graduate of Oliver Ames High School. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a pharmacists mate in New Caledonia and Guadalcanal aboard the U.S.S Sea Bass. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and then enrolled at the Boston School of Anatomy and Embalming. After serving as an apprentice funeral director at the Miller Funeral Home in Waltham, he and his beloved wife Marilyn, established the Copeland Funeral Home in Easton in 1951, working side by side for many years. George retired in 1982 and the funeral home was taken over by his son George H. Copeland. George was a member of Paul Dean Lodge, AF & AM and Easton Chapter #164, Order of the Eastern Star. He was a Past Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Massachusetts, Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Aleppo Shriners and the Easton Veterans of Foreign Wars. In 1953 he joined the board of directors of the Easton Cooperative Bank and retired as Chairman of the Board in 1998. George was an accomplished woodworker and enjoyed his hobby until the last year if his life. He spent many years at summer homes in Pocasset, MA and Gray, ME. He is survived by his loving daughter Cheryl Macuch of Bourne, MA and sons George H. Copeland II of Florida, Walter K. Copeland of Indiana and S. Carolina, Jeffrey L. Copeland of Onset, MA and Charles Copeland of Danvers, MA. Grandfather of 7 and great-grandfather of 4. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Ruth C. Rogers. George is also survived by his dear Salley Ouellette and her sons William and Kenneth. He will be missed by his loyal companion, his dog Holly. Visiting hours were held on Friday, June 14, 2013 from 4 - 8 p.m. in the George L. Copeland Funeral Home, 38 Center St., No. Easton. Funeral service was in the funeral home on Saturday, June 15, at 1 p.m. Burial with Military Honors will follow in South Easton Cemetery.
