Robert ("Bob") Otis Bigelow of Woods Hole MA, and formerly of Southborough MA, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2014 at the age of 87. He was the beloved husband (65 years) of Jean Davis Bigelow and is survived by several family: son John Payne Bigelow and wife Helen Vanek-Bigelowof Langhorne, PA daughter Carol Bigelow and husband Lawrence Mark Schwartz of Pelham, MA and grandchildren Nathaniel Bigelow Jacks and Benjamin Bigelow Jacks both of Brookly, NY, Dara Vanek, of Langhorne, PA and William Bigelow Schwartz Schenectady, NY He was pre-deceased by his daughter Margaret Bigelow in 2005. Bob was born March 28, 1926 to Robert Payne Bigelow and Caroline Chase Bigelow, and raised in Brookline MA. His education included Phillips Exeter Academy, graduating in 1943, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he obtained his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Engineering in 1951. Bob served his country with honor as a radio technician in the Navy during World War II. In 1952, he began a long and successful career with the New England Electric System (now National Grid) that included a 1960 Young Engineer of the Year Award from the National Society of Professional Engineers, a 1973 presentation to the United Nations, and a leadership role in the establishment of the New England/Hydro-Quebec Energy Partnership. Bob retired in 1993 as Senior Vice President of Systems Planning and Power Supply. In life and spirit, Bob will be remembered for his unique blend of friendship, intellect, and keen competitiveness. He was an avid sailor and racer, especially in his Cape Cod Knockabout ("Blue Jean"), who taught sailing to countless children and friends and who frequently won series and regattas. Bob was also a devotee of golf, as a member of the Woods Hole Golf Club, and ice hockey, which he played and coached in Southborough MA for over 20 years. Funeral services will be held on Sunday January 19, 2014 at 1:00 pm in the Church of the Messiah, 22 Church Street, Woods Hole, MA. 02543. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2014. (Details will follow.)
