John Perloff Obituary
John Walton Perloff passed away on December 19, 2013 in Wilmington, MA at the age of 99. A resident of Lexington, Ma from 1959 to 2012, he spent his final year at Woodbriar of Wilmington, after a fall that damaged his spinal cord. Born in Jacksonville, FL on January 26, 1914, John (known by friends and family as Jack) was pre-deceased by three brothers, Ben, Lewis and Sam. The four brothers grew up together in the Hebrew Orphans Home in Atlanta, GA during the 1920s after the death of their mother, Mary Silver Perlovsky, left their father, Harry Perlovsky, unable to care for them. John was the last surviving former resident of the orphans home, a philanthropically-oriented orphanage that kept in touch with the John and his brothers well into adulthood. John Perloff graduated from the University of Florida in 1936 with a degree in chemical engineering, working in the chemical and rubber industry in Ohio, California and Massachusetts for all of his working life, retiring from Texas-U.S. Chemical Company in 1983. John was married to Dorothy Relyea Perloff, a talented artist from whom he was later divorced. A talented musician, John played the drums in his college orchestra, and later in a dance band, but his true passion was for his piano, which he played every day until his fall in 2012. John created his own compositions at the piano, making recordings for friends and family who were amazed his pieces were never published. Well into his nineties, John remained actively engaged with the world, communicating regularly with friends and family by email, and listening to his favorite online news and classical music radio stations. Never shy about expressing his views to politicians, his desk drawer held a pile of pre-addressed envelopes to his U.S. senators. Self-reliant and independent, John had friends of all ages who will miss him greatly. John is survived by his son, James E. Perloff, his daughter-in-law Weihsin Chau, and grandson David Perloff of Burlington, MA, and his daughter Irene Perloff McCullough and son-in-law David A. McCullough of Atlanta, GA. He is survived by nieces Kay Felton., Susan Fowler, Martha LeFevre and Jayne Lindsay, by a nephew Alan Perloff, as well as by grand-nephews and grand-nieces, including Benjamin Horner, Courtney McKenna, and others. Family and friends gathered for a Funeral Service at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Saturday, December 21st at 9:30 a.m. Interment took place in Westview Cemetery, Lexington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Woodbriar Employee Assistance Fund, 90 West Street, Wilmington, MA 01887. www.nicholsfuneralhome.com
