James Alden Marsh, 95, formerly of Marblehead, passed away on May 9th in Baltimore, MD at the home of his daughter. He was the husband of the late Doris Anne (ne Bagger) Marsh, who predeceased him in 2010. Mr. Marsh was born on October 3rd, 1918 to Jasper & Dr. Anna (ne Peabody) Marsh of Danvers, MA. He graduated from Phillips Academy in 1937 and then from Harvard College in 1941. The next year, he joined the U.S. Army and was attached to the 349th Infantry Regiment, Medical Detachment, in North Africa and Italy. After the War, Mr. Marsh started work in his family businesses, Champion Lamp Works of Lynn and Vulcan Electric Co. of Danvers and later ran them with his siblings, John Peabody Marsh & Nancy Marsh Gares (both now deceased). In 1948, he married Doris Ann Bagger of Westfield, NJ, and they settled in Danvers. In 1951, the Marshes built a house in Marblehead, where they brought up their two children, Melissa Heaver, and Benjamin Hartvig Marsh, who predeceased his father in 1991.Mr. Marsh retired from the family businesses in 1973, but did consulting work at small manufacturing companies around New England. He served as President of the Board of the former North Shore Babies Hospital (now Mass General for Children at North Shore Medical Center). He also served on the regional board of the Salvation Army. Mr. Marsh had a life-long interest in machinery and maintained a small machine shop in his home where he built cannons for neighbors and friends. Mr. Marsh is also survived by his two grandchildren in Baltimore and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are private. Services by the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, Marblehead.
