John Jack H. Leary died December 26, 2012 at Grosvenors Park nursing home in Salem. He was the son of the late Charles and Mary Leary of Marblehead. Born in Swampscott on June 23, 1921, Jack grew up there and then made his home in Marblehead. He attended Marblehead schools through his sophomore year of high school, transferring to and graduating from Lawrence Academy. He attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor before leaving to serve as a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force in World War II. He continued his service in the Air Force Reserves until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel. After World War II, Jack attended and graduated from the New England College of optometry. He was an optometrist for 40 years in Marblehead. He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Marblehead, and a past president of Marblehead Bank. He was a life member of New England Football officials. He leaves his companion Shirley Pierce of Marblehead, Shirleys son, Dana Pierce (Nikale) of San Diego and their children Jack and Kate, as well as close friend F. Carlton Siegel. His sister, Frances, predeceased him. Dr. Learys Funeral Mass was held on Monday December 31, 2012 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 80 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead at 10:00 A.M. relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
