Charles Hubbard Obituary

Charles A. Hubbard, II, (Charlie,) 88, of Kittery, ME, formerly of York Harbor, ME and Westwood, MA, passed away peacefully at his residence on October 19, 2013. His wife of 51 years, Phyllis S. Hubbard, predeceased him on October 28, 2005. Born in Boston, May 19, 1925, son of the late Harry A. and Josephine Rollins Hubbard, Charlie was a graduate of Newton High School, attended Yale University and graduated from Suffolk University Law School. A World War II veteran, Charlie was a member of the Third Army, 280th Combat Engineers, and participated in the campaigns of the Battle of the Bulge and crossing the Rhine into Germany. In the 1950s, he was a member of the Massachusetts National Guard and attained the rank of Captain. Charlie was gifted with a wonderful intellect, leadership abilities and great organizational skills. Upon returning from the war and earning his law degree, Charlie was the founder and president of Allied Adjustment Service, an insurance adjustment company, located in Needham, MA. Under Charlies guidance, the company grew to over 100 employees with offices located throughout the northeast. Charlie was a member of the York Harbor Reading Room and York Golf Club, a former member of the Board of Directors of Strawberry Banke and was involved in many civic activities in the Maine Seacoast Area. He traced his lineage to the early settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was a direct descendent of Hezekiah Hubbard, a member of the militia in the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He was a past president and active member of the Massachusetts Chapters of the Founders and Patriots of America and the Sons of the Revolution. He was also a member of the American Bar Association and Massachusetts Bar Association. During their marriage, Charlie and Phyllis traveled extensively, including trips to Japan, China, Indonesia, French Polynesia, the Virgin Islands and several mainland U.S. and European locations. They were also active supporters of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and were involved in many BSO activities during Phyllis tenure as an Overseer with the Orchestra. Charlie is survived by his family in Massachusetts. Two sons, Steven and his wife, Susanne, of Auburn; Jonathan and his wife, Mary Catherine, of Norfolk; two granddaughters, Rachel A. Vaillancourt and husband, Kevin, of Hopedale; Emily L. Hubbard of Medway; daughter-in-law, Kathleen N. Hubbard also of Medway and step-granddaughter, Catherine N. Vickers of Worcester. In addition, he is survived by a brother-in-law, Gene Hoffman, nephews, cousins and several wonderful friends, including his dear friend, Patricia Ballentyne. He was predeceased by a beloved son, Charles A. Hubbard, Jr. on December 2, 1998. An avid Boston sports fan, he worked at Fenway Park as a teenager and for many years was a season ticket holder to the Bruins and Red Sox. In 1970, he and his son, Steven, were in the Boston Garden, to witness the thrilling Bobby Orr goal in the Bruins Stanley Cup win. He was very proud of his children and their accomplishments and was very pleased to attend the wedding of his granddaughter, Rachel, this past June. He remained engaged and lived life to the fullest to the very end. All who knew him can attest to the fact that he will not soon be forgotten. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Joel Keenan, the caregivers of Greater Faith Works, and his loyal friend, Karen Kahn, for their excellent and compassionate care of Charlie during the final months of his life. A memorial service will be held at the Stage Neck Inn, 8 Stage Neck Road, York Harbor, Maine, on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at noontime. Arrangements by J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery, Maine.
