Ruth (Fessenden) Boutilier, 76, died Oct. 14, of breast cancer, while surrounded by family at her home in Plymouth. She grew up in North Andover, Mass., a daughter of the late Charles and Pauline (Angier) Fessenden. She graduated from Boston University in 1959 with an A.B. in French and was a popular teacher of elementary- and middle-school French in Salem, N.H., Manchester-by-the-Sea and Andover, Mass. She raised her family in Bridgewater, where she lived for 35 years and was active in Central Square Congregational Church, the Bridgewater State College Faculty Wives and the Garden Club. She was accomplished at knitting and embroidery and baked hundreds of Christmas cookies every year. She also loved traveling. In 2000 she moved to Plymouth, where she enjoyed her backyard pond and her neighbors. Ruthie was the kind of person who would always visit a friend in the hospital, drive someone to a doctor's appointment or check on a neighbor who'd suffered a loss. She was patriotic and proud of her New England heritage, and she lived by the saying, "Every day may not be good, but there's good in every day." She faced her cancer diagnosis bravely and with a positive attitude and was an inspiration to others she knew who were sick. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert, of Plymouth; three sons, Scott, of Sandwich; Glenn, of Bridgewater; and Robert, of Amherst, Mass.; three grandchildren, Joshua, Elizabeth and Samantha; three daughters-in-law, Sharion, Lynn and Emily; brother- and sister-in-law William and Patricia Boutilier of North Andover; sister-in-law Janice Boutilier of Montpelier, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Cookson of North Andover. A memorial service will be planned at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the McCarthy Care Center at Hope Hospice (hopehealthco.org) or to any favorite charity.
