Ralph Walter Brown, age 90, a Stoneham resident since 1951, passed away, January 19, 2013. He was the beloved husband of the late Bertha Frances (Dorr) Brown. Born and raised in Charlestown, MA, Ralph was the son of the late Edmund P. and Lidie M. (Denton) Brown. He attended Norwich University and CCNY. Mr. Brown was an Army veteran and served in the European Theatre during WWII. Throughout his career, he was employed as a longshoreman along the Boston waterfront. Mr. Brown was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, past president of the Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association, a charter member of the Stoneham Elks, a life member of the Malden Irish American Association, the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars. He was also a past member of the International Longshoremens Association, Local 799. Mr. Brown was proud of his Charlestown roots and he was a generous benefactor to the community, which included scholarships for the Old Charlestown Schoolboys and Old Charlestown Schoolgirls Association and funds to restore the stained glass window at the entrance to St. Catherine of Siena Church. He was the brother of Edward H. Brown of Chicopee and Northport, FL, Grace A. Hailer of Hingham and the late Harold T. Brown, Elida M. Sprissler, James Brown, Ernest J. Brown and Loretta M. Fredericks. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and dear friends, including Mildred Murray of S. Boston and Mary McClellan of Stoneham. A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, January 24th at 10 A.M. at St. Mary Church, 55 Warren St., Charlestown. Visiting hours will be held at the Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home, 4 Common St., Stoneham, Wednesday, 4-7 P.M. Interment with military honors will be private at the National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association, PO Box 290375, Charlestown, MA 021299-0207.
