Ernest R. Barrett, SSgt./Firefighter United States Air Force and WWII Veteran, formerly of Quincy, passed away peacefully in Braintree on Aug. 17, 2014. He was 90 years old. Beloved husband of the late Marion A. (Stanley). Loving father of Richard M. Barrett and wife Katherine of Charlotte, N.C., Gertrude C. Singleton of Medford, Mass., Nancy M. Sweider and husband Alan of North Attleboro, Mass., Kathleen A. Tyrrell and husband Thomas of Dorchester, Mass. and Rita M. Barrett also of North Attleboro, Mass. Loving brother of Edna West of Florida, John Barrett of South Boston, Mildred McGrath of North Carolina and Wilma McGrath of Mississippi. Ernie was also a brother to the late Howard Barrett. Other survivors include 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and longtime companion of over 23 years Mary Pray of Easton. Born Aug. 28, 1923 in Boston, Mass. Ernest was a son to the late John J. and Wilhelmina (Reid) Barrett. He attended Boston Public Schools. Mr. Barrett was employed as a Civil Engineer by the Commonwealth Of Massachusetts Department of Public Works for many years before his retirement in 1981. Sgt. Barrett served honorably with both the United States Army and United States Air Force. Past Commander of the George F. Bryan VFW Post # 613 and the Cyril P. Morrisette American Legion Post # 294 in Quincy. Visiting hours was from 4 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug.. 21, 2014 in the Sheehan Funeral Home, 115 Monk Street, Stoughton. Funeral service on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial with military honors to follow at 1:30 p.m. MA Veterans National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass.
