Winifred W. Grinnell of Sudbury died peacefully Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at Sudbury Pines Extended Care Facility in Sudbury following a period of declining health. She was 86 and the wife of the late Frank Grinnell. Born in Boston July 9, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Michael J. and Mary (Houlihan-Holland) Waldron. Mrs. Grinnell was a well known Sudbury resident for many years and was active in numerous community activities. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and served as Secretary of the Memorial Day Committee for over thirty years. For almost all of those years and well into her 80s, for Memorial Day Mrs. Grinnell would place a flag on each of the more than 500 graves of veterans in the Sudbury cemeteries. She was honored for her work on the committee by having been selected as Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day Parade. She had also been selected as Sudbury Person of the Year by the Sudbury Grange. In addition to the Memorial Day Committee she served on the Sudbury Veterans Advisory Committee from 1993 to 2009 and was an Election Official from 2002 to 2013. Active in genealogical circles, she established her Husband Frank and Son Barry as members of the Mayflower Society and Sons of the American Revolution and assisted her husband when he was the Registrar of the GAR. She was also a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Mrs. Grinnell was often seen in town on her daily rounds at the Sudbury Town Hall, Goodnow Library, Sudbury Senior Center and Sudbury Farms. She is survived by her son Barry Grinnell of New Hampshire, her dear friend Lucile Dixon of Sudbury, nieces and nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be held Friday from the Duckett-J. S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute,656 Boston Post Road, Rt. 20, Sudbury at 8:00 am followed by a funeral mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 160 Concord Rd., Sudbury at 9:00 oclock. Visitation at the funeral home will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Interment in New North Cemetery. Donations can be made to /Breast cancer Research, 30 Speen St., Framingham, Ma 01701.
