Bernard Eyden, 94, of Winchester, Massachusetts, died peacefully on May 16, 2014, with his children at his side. Born in 1919 in Rugby, England, and raised in London, he was the only child of John and Violet (Clay) Eyden. He was the beloved husband for 60 years of the late L. Constance (Webster) Eyden from Toronto, Ontario, and the devoted father of Allan Eyden and Janice Eyden of Winchester. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering with two national awards from Southall Technical College and was serving a three-year apprenticeship in a major heavy equipment company when the Germans began bombing London in WWII. In 1942 he was commissioned into the British Army's Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and in 1943 started his overseas service in North Africa where he was posted with the 46th British Infantry Division, later participating in the Allied invasion of Italy at Salerno. He immigrated to Toronto in 1947 and moved with his family to Winchester in 1957. In his profession as chief mechanical engineer specializing in hydropower, he worked for major global companies in Boston, Denver, Brazil, and Houston. He and Constance returned to Winchester in retirement in 1987, where he was active in several local organizations. Arrangements by Costello Funeral Home of Winchester. Memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
