Albert H. Mertz, age 92, of Wisconsin Rapids passed away on Thursday August 14th, 2014 at Riverview Hospital.

Visitation will be held on Sunday August 17 from 4-7pm at Higgins Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids. Funeral Service will be held Monday, August 18th at 10am at Saratoga Moravian Church with Olaf Andersen officiating burial will follow at Restlawn cemetery with Post 9 American Legion doing military rites.

Albert was born November 12, 1921 in Mission, South Dakota to the late Henry and Emma (Schroer) Mertz. He moved to Wisconsin Rapids at an early age, where he grew up, attended school, and would eventually raise a family. Albert proudly served his country in World War II as an airplane mechanic with the U.S. Army. He married the love of his life, Jean (Gazeley) Mertz on June 21, 1947. He worked and retired from Consolidated Papers in Wisconsin Rapids and spent part of his retirement doing missionary work in Alaska. He was a layman minister throughout his life.

Albert enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, steam engines, working with tractors and helping others. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Jean of 67 years; two sons: Jerry (Sherry) Mertz of California, David (Sandy) Mertz of Wisconsin Rapids; two daughters: Diane (Terry) Stelzer of Wisconsin Rapids, Beverly (Scott) Brown of Illinois; as well as seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Martin and Elmer; a sister: Marie; a son; and a daughter.
