Gail Audrey Crowns, 88, passed away on June 16, 2013 at St. Josephs Hospital in Marshfield, WI. She was born to Elmer and Emma Anderson on May 13, 1925 in Veblen, South Dakota. In October of 1925, Emma brought Gail to her Aunt Helen and Uncle Orin Lee to care for her for Emma was too ill and her father Elmer had passed away. Emma later passed away on November 11, 1926 after a 3 year battle with cancer. Gail was then adopted by her aunt and uncle and raised in Elmwood, WI.
In 1942 she graduated from Elmwood High School. When she was only a junior in high school she attended the first Badger Girl State. She went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1946 with a B.S. degree in Dietetics and Institutional Management. Gail worked for the Harding Hotel Co. in Chicago, the City Club in Detroit and moved back to Madison to work on a M.S. degree while working as a dietitian for the UW dorms.
She met Byron Crowns in Madison and they were married on February 2, 1950. They moved to Wisconsin Rapids upon Byron's completion of Law School in 1950. They were blessed with 3 children.
Gail lived an active life of involvement in the Girls Scouts and Cub Scouts along with serving on the Governors Committee for youth and children for several years, active member of the Elk Ladies, American Association of University Women and Heart of Wisconsin, Gem and Mineral Society.
She is survived by her 3 children, Suzanne (John) Hamm, Michael (Julie) Crowns and David (Laura) Crowns; grandchildren Mariah Derke, Victor Bolden, Catherine Crowns and Jacob Crowns; and great grandchildren Madeline and Siera Derke.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Emma, husband Byron, 2 brothers and 2 sisters, Clayton (Alice) Anderson, Veblen, South Dakota; Esther (Joe) Mathews; Ruth (Sam) Jennen, Veblen, South Dakota and Jack (Helen) Anderson, South Milwaukee, WI.
In lieu of flowers donations may be given to Marshfield Clinic Breast Cancer Research Fund.
Services will be held at Higgins Funeral Home on June 25, 2013 with visitation from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with service at 1:00 pm with Rev. Robert Buckman, officiating.
