Sering, Herbert L.

Herbert L. Sering, age 89, formerly of Wisconsin Rapids, WI died Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI.

Funeral Services are 11:00 AM Monday, May 12, 2014 at the United Methodist Church, Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Shirley Carpenter will officiate. Visitation will be at the United Methodist Church on Monday from 9:30-11:00 AM. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery with military rites provided by VFW Post #2534 of Wisconsin Rapids. Ritchay Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids is assisting the family.

Herb was born October 31, 1924 in Wisconsin Rapids, WI to Erick and Winnie (Peterson) Sering. He was employed at Preway Inc, Consolidated Papers Inc and retired in 1980 as Grand Secretary of the Independent Order of Oddfellows State office. After retiring Herb drove funeral coach for Kersten's Funeral Coach Service in Wisconsin Rapids, WI for 11 years. Herb served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was injured on March 5, 1945, earning an honorable discharge and purple heart.

Herb was a man of service and compassion. He was active in many organizations in the community including the Wisconsin Rapids Masonic Lodge #128 F & A.M.; the Independent Order of Oddfellows; the Loyal Order of Moose; was a member of American Legion Post #9; VFW Post #2534; Disabled American Veterans Chapter #55; and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Herb was very active in all these organizations and served in many offices while a member.

Herb was named Wisconsin Rapids Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1956, was a longtime blood donor to his community and after moving to the Veterans Home in King was active helping his fellow veterans.

Herb is survived by his nephew, Robert (Kathy) Lamb of Holmen, WI, nieces, nephews and cousins and many close friends including Earl and Marion Arendt of Wisconsin Rapids, WI.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Marion and Dorothy.

A memorial in Herb's name will be established at a later date.
