Sylvester Vechinski Obituary
Sylvester L. Vechinski, 93, of 3230 Sampson St., Wisconsin Rapids, passed away at Edgewater Haven Nursing Home on Saturday, May 5, 2012.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids. Rev. John Steiner will officiate. Visitation will be held at Ritchay Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids from 4:00-8:00 PM Tuesday and Wednesday at the Church from 10:00-11:00 AM. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Restlawn Memorial Park with military rites provided by VFW Post #2534 of Wisconsin Rapids, WI.

Sylvester was born July 14, 1918 in Nekoosa, WI to John and Dora (Lontkowski) Vechinski. He married Bernice Worzalla at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids on April 28, 1948. She recently passed away December 9, 2011.

Sylvester worked briefly for Nekoosa Edwards Paper Company before joining the U.S. Army in 1942. He achieved TEC 4 rank while serving in the 70th Tank Battalion. He served in the European - African -

Middle Eastern Theaters. He participated in the Invasion of Sicily and the D-Day Invasion of

Normandy/Utah Beach. He returned home and began working for Wood County Telephone Co. for

over 30 years retiring as a construction foreman.

He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Council #1558 of Wisconsin Rapids, the VFW Post #2534 of Wisconsin Rapids and American Legion Post #9 of Wisconsin Rapids. Sylvester enjoyed socializing with friends and family, loved his companionship of his canine friends and listening to and playing Polka music on his Star concertinas.

He is survived by sons, Marvin (Sybil) Krzykowski, Gary Vechinski, Carey Vechinski, Ronald (Nancy)

Vechinski, Dale (Debbie) Vechinski, Peter (Lisa) Vechinski, and Michael (Fae Brock) Vechinski, all of

Wisconsin Rapids; and daughter, Donna (Richard) Van Alstine of Arkdale; friend, Cheryl Vechinski; 17 grandchildren, Robert Sainij of Rudolph, WI , Renee (Mark) Kolinski of Wisconsin Rapids, Richard (Jamie) Krzykowski of Santa Claus IN, Michelle (Robert) Wilhorn of Adams, WI, Scott Ostruske of Arkdale, WI, Shannon (Paul) Schanen of Adams, WI, Jason (Jenny) Vechinski of Wisconsin Rapids, Lisa (Jamie) Williams of Nekoosa, Barry Vechinski of Madison, Angela Vechinski of Madison, Ryan Vechinski of Rice Lake, Josef (Sara) Vechinski of Marshfield, Raquel ( Louis Molepske) Vechinski of Stevens Point, Courtney (Ian) Schultz of Nekoosa, Brooke Vechinski of Madison, Michael Vechinski II of Chicago, ILL, Amber Vechinski of Bancroft, WI, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Sylvester was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Bernice; parents, John and Dora Vechinski, sisters, Selma (Carlton) Reiman and Marie (Stanley) Erdman and granddaughter, Gina (Vechinski)Winters.

Sylvester's family would like to thank Arborwood Lodge, Edgewater Haven, St. Joseph Hospital, Marshfield Clinic and Ministry Home Care Hospice for the wonderful care given to Sylvester.
