ZANESVILLE: Gordon C. Axe "Mr. Follow-thru", 86 of Zanesville, OH died Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Genesis Hospice and Palliative Care following a brief illness.
He was born Friday, October 29, 1926 in Zanesville the son of Harold Axe and Myrtle (Jasper) Axe.
He was married on June 6, 1949 to Ruth (Mahaney) Axe who preceded him in death on January 26, 2004.
Mr. Axe was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and a mold maker for Zanesville Mold. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a Senior Bowler, enjoyed square dancing, and was a member of the Zamora Club and River Boat Club. He was also an avid follower of Bishop Rosecrans Sports especially basketball.
He is survived by one daughter, Teresa Block, of Zanesville; son-in-law Edward Block, Jr. of Zanesville; granddaughter, Caila Block (Joseph) Grether of Zanesville; two great grandchildren, Caidence Hoops and Reilly Hoops of Zanesville; and brother, Harold "Junior" Axe of Avon, OH.
In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one grandson, Deviln Hoops; sister, Gloria Axe Davis; four brothers-in law, William Kerby, Samuel Davis, Evander (Sony) Farabee and Gordon Hoffman; and two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" Axe and Marilyn (Mickey) Kerby.
Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 PM on Sunday. October 6, 2013 at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home 935 Forest Ave. Zanesville, OH. A wake service will be held at 7:45PM on Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 7, 2013 at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 925 Main St. Zanesville, with Fr. Martin J. Ralko as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Mt. Olive Cemetery with VFW Post 1058 conducting full military honors.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Muskingum County Center for Seniors, 200 Sunrise Center Drive, Zanesville or Adult Daycare Program, Alfred Care Center, 1035 Beverly Avenue, Zanesville, OH 43701 in Gordon's memory.
