A. Richard "Dick" Smith
AMHERST: A. Richard "Dick" Smith, 84, years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013, at New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain following a brief illness.
He was born April 23, 1929, in Columbus, Ohio.
Dick was raised in Roseville, Ohio where he graduated from high School. He continued his education by attending Ohio University.
Dick started his career in banking as a collector working at various banks throughout the state for forty-three years before retiring as the President and CEO of Malta National Bank. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Amherst and served on numerous boards during his church memberships. He was a member of the Stonington Masonic Lodge #503 where he served as a 32 degree mason and was also involved with the Shriner organization. Dick invested his time and energy with mentoring young people in the Boy Scouts. He was a scout leader with the Zanesville Troop #117, Springfield #150, and Lexington #152. During this time he was awarded the Silver Beaver, and Lamb Award and attended numerous Philmont hikes. Dick also produced three Eagle Scouts which included his two sons and one grandson. He was also a member of the Firelands Council Executive board for many years. In his spare time, he loved to remodel homes of which he did seventy-five. His hobbies included traveling which included all fifty states and nine trips to Europe and numerous cruises as well as square dancing with his wife. Dick was involved in multiple service groups throughout the state including the Jaycees, Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary International and the Exchange Club. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and was never to busy too attend all of their events.
Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-three years Eloise Smith (nee: Fye); his sons and their wives, Richard A. and Deborah Smith of Helotes, Texas, Mike R. and Debra Smith of Amherst; his daughter and her husband Ann E. and Darren Conley of Amherst; grandchildren, Richard M. (Beth) Smith, Katelyn A. Smith, Jamie B. Smith, Jordan M. Smith, Courtney Conley, Jacob Conley and Bradley Conley; one great grandson, Sawyer E. Smith.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Donald; and his parents, Andrew R. and Irene Smith (nee: Young).
Dick's family would like to extend their deep gratitude to the staff of the Wesleyan Village for their compassion and care extended to their family during this difficult time.
Friends may call Wednesday, July 24, 2013, from 3- 5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church; 115 Central Drive, Amherst. The Rev. Gary Richard, will officiate. Burial will follow at Cleveland Avenue Cemetery, Amherst.
