''Commander Philip S. Booth has left the bridge''.
Where to begin when describing the life that none of us (including Dad) thought would ever end.
The Commander lived ninety-six glorious years with not one regret. He married the gal of his dreams, Muriel (Sinclair) in London, England near the end of
. Secretly he was a closet bigamist as Mom soon found out when he later confessed that he was also married to the Navy. Dad loved the sea but hated swimming which might explain why during his command of HMCS Athabaskan, he not once let his ship run aground. He patrolled the world in the service of his country then later cruised it with his bride of 62 years. In retirement his code of conduct remained steadfast: Be courteous, in command, decisive, honorable, trustworthy and on time as drinks will be served in the officer's mess at 1700 hours. A gifted boy soprano whose love of music and family had him soloing at Christ Church Oxford and then home to Thetis Island to work alongside his father, mother and sister at the family run general store. He said those were the happiest days of his life until I reminded him of the birth of his wonderful and talented children Gillian and Michael. He was equally proud of his two grandsons, David and Andrew for their outstanding careers and academic achievements.
So many to thank. His life long friend Cdr. Peter Chance, Dr. Shaw and the nurses at Lions Gate Hospital who held his hand in passing, Hollyburn House and the myriad of friends who've written their kind words of condolence. Fondly remembered by Sydney, Mary, Charlotte, Patrick, and Ruth. Dad passed away quietly. Gill and I hope with a sense of peace and understanding that his time here was sacred, meaningful and complete.
