Lachman, Selma
Oct. 27, 1928 - Aug. 26, 2016 Selma Berdiansky Lachman passed away peacefully at Silverado Senior Living on August 26, 2016 in Belmont, California at age 87. Selma was born in Baltimore, Maryland, daughter of Edith and Louis Berdiansky, sister of Benjamin Berdann, Lily Berdiansky Warren, and Ann Berdiansky Burgess, all previously deceased. She attended Forest Park High School and Goucher College, where she majored in history, kindling a life-long interest in national and world affairs. Selma worked in a part-time job at Enoch Pratt Public Library, where she met the former Bernard "Bunky" Lachman, whom she soon married. Out of their devoted forty-seven-year union were born three children: Diane Lachman Murez, Larry Lachman, and Jan Lachman. During their long and happy life together, Selma and Bunky were also blessed with four grandchildren: Sam and Michael Murez, Laura and Alex Indick. Selma was a highly intelligent, intense, witty and warm person who above all else enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Always an avid reader, with a wide-ranging curiosity, she took great pleasure in lectures and classes in a myriad of subjects; especially literature, politics and the French language. Selma was active in her community, participating in volunteer work for the League of Women Voters and A.F.S. International. She and Bunky were enthusiastic theater-goers. They travelled widely together and both had a special affinity for Sanibel, Florida, where they spent the winter months for many years, often joined by the extended family. When Bunky passed away, Selma moved to Sonoma, California, where she created an active new life for herself. She made the most of her last four years at Silverado Senior Living. The family extends their warmest thanks to the facility for their enlightened philosophy towards dementia care, and especially to all the wonderful staff who developed such a loving bond with Selma. Selma leaves behind her three much-loved children, as well as her adored grandchildren. A small memorial service was held for her in San Francisco on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. An inurnment ceremony will take place on January 2, 2017 at Fort Meyers Memorial Gardens in Florida, when Selma will finally rejoin her beloved Bunky. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you support dementia and Alzheimer's research and outreach services, or make a contribution to the Bernard Lachman Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Please send condolences to Lachman, 1002 Princeton Drive, Sonoma, CA 95476.
