Helen Elizabeth Alestock was born on January 20, 1929 in Raphine, Virginia to the late Scott and the late Ocie Rhodes Alestock. She was the second of nine children born to this union.
She graduated from Lylburn Downing High School in Lexington, Virginia. She and her family were members of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Steeles Tavern, VA. Later she became one of the founding members of First Baptist Church, Sterling, Virginia under the late Rev. John Wesley Thornton where she served over the years as usher, choir member and church secretary. Recently, she was a member of Martin Luther King Jr. Christian Church, Reston, Virginia under the leadership of Rev. Jean Robinson-Casey.
She and her former husband, Charles Marcellus Payne, were married in 1949 and from their union they had six children.
Helen loved to knit, crochet, do crossword puzzles, play computer games and play scrabble with friends, and she had a special fondness for all wrestling shows. On her children’s birthdays she would treat them to their favorite home-cooked meal and dessert of choice.
On Friday, October 10, 2008 at INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia and surrounded by her family, Helen transitioned from this earthly life to life eternal.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her brother, William, who gave her the nickname Guinea, brother, Ray Alestock and sister, Mary Alice Howard.
She leaves to cherish her memory six children: Carolyn Newton (Fredrick) of Jacksonville, FL; Beverly Walker (Charles) of Herndon, VA; Charles Payne Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; Karen Williams (Ray) of Sterling, VA; Lisa Keating (Sean) of Herndon, VA; and Stephon Payne (Cheray) of Sterling, VA; 11 grandchildren: Shaylnn Hand (David); Nyshalyn Hogan, Brenden Roy (Lauren), Erin Newton, Brianna Roy, Ray Williams Jr., Patrick Keating, Brittney Williams, Fabiann Keating, Timothy Keating and Alisa Keating; 7 great-grandchildren: Stephanie, Joshua, Sarah Hand, Josiah, Jalonnee, Janiah, and Eli Hogan; 3 sisters: Katherine King of Staunton, VA, Jean Johnson of Herndon, VA, Grace Every of Buena Vista, VA; 2 brothers: Scott Alestock, Jr. of Steeles Tavern VA, and Winston Alestock (Ruth) of Waynesboro, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends including Portia Johnson.
Her Viewing will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2008, 10:00 am until time of Home Going Service, 11:00 am at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 2516 Squirrel Hill Road, Herndon, VA. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Steeles Tavern, VA. Arrangements entrusted to Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., Indian Head, Maryland.
