Elizabeth C. Spellman, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, November 15, 2016. Elizabeth was the daughter of Geraldine Wallace Nowka and wife of Richard, who preceded her in death in 1989. She is survived by daughter, Holly Spellman and son, James Scott Gutierrez.
Born in Chicago, IL, Elizabeth attended Monmouth College, IL and Northwestern U., IL and was a member of the Journalism Sorority, Epsilon Eta Phi. After college, she was briefly in radio acting and later was a copywriter for an ad agency. In 1954, Elizabeth moved to Albuquerque earning a Education degree at UNM. She taught at Albuquerque Job Corps Center and later at Southwestern Indian Institute (SIPI). Elizabeth was president of the New Combers' Club and in 1968, she joined Amigos, support group of Musical Theatre Southwest (ACLOA) and served on the board. Elizabeth was also a longtime volunteer of the Albuquerque Little Theatre. She and her husband were Docents at the Rio Grande Zoo and traveled in the Zoo van with Zoo animals to different New Mexico cities to speak at various schools. As a Docent for the Albuquerque Art Museum, she conducted walking tours of Old Town and the Museum Sculpture Garden. She loved the Chicago Cubs, Norte Dame and the Dallas Cowboys. Elizabeth enjoyed the companionship of many dogs, particularly her beloved Corgi, Buster, who's loyal spirit remained by her side until the very end.
Elizabeth will be interred beside her husband, Dick, at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A celebration of her life is planned by her daughter, Holly at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local animal rescue.
