Betty Blackwell Obituary

Blackwell, Betty Orsburn

Betty Jane Orsburn Blackwell lost her battle with pancreatic cancer on May 6, 2015. She was born in Red Mt., CA in 1939, where her father worked in the tungsten mines in the Mojave Desert. She spent her childhood southeast of Gainesville, TX, in the farming/ranching community of Woodbine, always taking pride in her farming background. She graduated from Callisburg, TX high school in 1957. Betty attended business college in Dallas, where she met her future husband, Bennie Blackwell. After marriage in 1960, they lived in Irving, TX; Fayetteville, AR; Albuquerque, NM; Stanford, CA; and Ruston, LA. In 1977 she received her degree in dietetics from UNM. The last 20 years of her life were spent in Corrales, NM where she involved herself in numerous volunteer activities. She was a docent at the Historic Old San Ysidro Church and at Casa San Ysidro, where she specialized in giving children's tours. Among her many talents were hand quilting and old clock repair. Betty was beloved by her family and respected by those who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years Bennie Blackwell; sons Jeff (wife Marlene) and Greg; grandson Jacob (wife Kittie); and great-granddaughter Alea June. She is also survived by her brother Houston Orsburn (wife Sharon) of Marlow, OK.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2pm on Sunday, May 24th at Historic Old San Ysidro Church in Corrales, 966 Old Church Rd.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Corrales Historical Society, PO Box 1051, Corrales, NM 87048.

I first met Betty in 1965. She was a friend, devoted Mom, wife to Ben, health conscious, and always had a shy smile. Whether spending my first New Years in NM (1965) with she and Ben or visiting her from TX (2014) in the hospital I will remember her over those 50 years. She is off somewhere sleeping on her sun porch!

Bennie and Family,
Our deepest sympathy. We know what a lovely person Betty was, and what a strong fighter she was of the cancer. May God bless you and give you His peace.

Betty, your valiant fight has ended but not your example of strength and courage remains. Soon, the promise of Isa 33: 24 when no one will say, I am sick" will become a reality.
